Michoacan

📍 Capital: Morelia🏙️ 5 key cities💰 $650-$3,050/day

Overview

Michoacan is a state of magical contrasts: from the migration of millions of monarch butterflies in its oyamel forests to the Day of the Dead traditions on the islands of Lake Patzcuaro, recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Morelia, the capital, is a colonial gem with its 253-arch aqueduct and baroque cathedral illuminated at night. Patzcuaro charms with its indigenous Purepecha atmosphere, Janitzio island, and unique lacquerwork crafts. Uruapan surprises with the Cupatitzio Ravine National Park and proximity to Paricutin volcano. Michoacan cuisine includes Quiroga-style carnitas, uchepos, corundas, and the famous Morelia ate (fruit paste).

🌤️ Best time to visit

November to March: monarch butterfly season and Day of the Dead. Morelia has temperate weather year-round (15-25°C / 59-77°F). October-November for Day of the Dead and Morelia Film Festival. Rainy season (June-September) with afternoon downpours but very green landscapes.
