Veracruz

📍 Capital: Xalapa🏙️ 5 key cities💰 $670-$3,200/day

Overview

Veracruz is the state where Mexico faces the Gulf, with 745 km of tropical coastline, a history beginning with the arrival of Hernan Cortes, and a vibrant culture marked by son jarocho music, danzon dancing, and the country's most joyous carnival. The archaeological zone of El Tajin, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserves the impressive Pyramid of the Niches from the Totonac culture. Xalapa, the capital, surprises with its Anthropology Museum (Mexico's second most important), highland coffee plantations, and misty climate. The port of Veracruz is perpetual celebration with its malecon, zocalo with marimba, and the Gulf's best seafood. Jalcomulco offers world-class rafting, Coatepec seduces with artisan coffee, and Tlacotalpan charms with colorful architecture on the banks of the Papaloapan River.

🌤️ Best time to visit

November to April: dry weather on the coast, temperatures of 25-32°C (77-90°F). February for Veracruz Carnival (Mexico's largest). Xalapa is cool year-round (15-22°C / 59-72°F) with frequent mist. Avoid September-October for hurricanes. March is ideal for El Tajin with the Cumbre Tajin cultural festival.
