Veracruz
Veracruz, the first Spanish port in Mexico founded by Hernán Cortés in 1519, is a city that moves to the rhythm of son jarocho and danzón. Its malecón offers views of the Gulf of Mexico, while the San Juan de Ulúa fortress tells centuries of history as a prison and military fort. The zócalo, with its arcades and cafés, is the heart of social life where marimbas and harps play every night. The Veracruz Carnival is the largest in Mexico. Nearby lie the coffee plantations of Coatepec and the waterfalls of Xico, on the slopes of Cofre de Perote.
