Guide étape par étape
Flying from Mexico City to Cancún is the fastest and most popular way to reach the Mexican Caribbean. With over 30 daily flights operated by Aeroméxico, Volaris, and VivaAerobus, you'll find options starting at $1,200 MXN if you book in advance. The flight takes between 2 hours 15 minutes and 2 hours 45 minutes. This guide takes you from your home all the way to Cancún's Hotel Zone.
The AICM has two terminals: Terminal 1 (T1) is used by Volaris and VivaAerobus, while Terminal 2 (T2) is Aeroméxico's hub. Check your terminal before leaving because they're separate and transferring between them takes 15-20 minutes on the free Aerotrén. Ideally arrive 2 hours before your flight. From the Historic Center or Zona Rosa, an Uber costs $80-$150 MXN (20-40 minutes depending on traffic). The cheapest option is the Metro: take Line 5 (yellow) to Terminal Aérea station, which drops you at T1's door. For T2, walk to the Aerotrén inside T1. Note: the metro isn't practical with large luggage during rush hour (7-9 AM and 6-8 PM).

💡 Conseils
- •If taking Uber, set the destination as 'AICM Terminal 1' or 'AICM Terminal 2' so the GPS takes you to the right terminal.
- •At T1, security lines can be long. Keep your carry-on within size limits (55x40x25 cm) to avoid surcharges on low-cost airlines.
- •If flying Volaris or VivaAerobus, check in online 24 hours before. Otherwise, they charge $300-500 to do it at the airport.
💡 Conseils généraux pour cette route
- ✦Book your flight at least 3 weeks in advance for the best prices. The lowest fares are Tuesday through Thursday.
- ✦Peak season in Cancún is December through April and Easter week. Flights can cost double. The best price-weather ratio is May-June and November.
- ✦Bring biodegradable sunscreen if you'll be swimming in cenotes or the sea. It's mandatory in Quintana Roo to protect the reefs.
- ✦If you plan to visit Tulum, Playa del Carmen, or Isla Mujeres, it's cheaper to take ADO buses or colectivos from downtown Cancún than to book tours.
