🛬How to get there from the airport
Compare transport options from each airport to the stadium
Monterrey International Airport (MTY)
Mariano Escobedo airport, main hub of northern Mexico. Located northeast of the city, about 24 km from Estadio BBVA (30-40 min by car without traffic).
Uber / DiDi
The most practical way from the airport. Tracked ride, A/C (critical in 40°C heat).
💡 Official Uber zones at T1 and T2 exits. High surge pricing on match days — book ahead.
Authorized airport taxi
Official taxi stand with fixed zone rates. Buy your voucher at the counter before exiting.
💡 Usually pricier than Uber, but NO surge pricing on match days — can work out better.
Transmetro bus to Metro
Public transport route: Transmetro bus to Metro Anáhuac (Line 2), then transfer to get closer to the stadium.
💡 Cheap but slow and not always air-conditioned. Only recommended without large luggage.
FIFA / hotel shuttle
Many San Pedro and Valle Oriente hotels offer airport shuttles. FIFA will run official shuttles on match days.
💡 Ask at booking if your hotel offers a shuttle — usually free. FIFA shuttle bookable at FIFA.com/tickets.
🚗Getting around the city
Options to get around, color-coded by safety level
Uber / DiDi
Safest and most practical transport in Monterrey. A/C, tracked ride, digital payment.
💡 With 40°C heat, A/C transport is almost mandatory. High surge pricing near the stadium on match days.
Monterrey Metro (Metrorrey)
Cleaner and less crowded than CDMX's. 3 active lines. For the stadium, exit at 'Exposición' (L2) + FIFA shuttle.
💡 Buy a 'Feria' card at any station ($10 MXN + balance). Hours: 5am-midnight.
Ecovía (green bus)
BRT system with dedicated lane and A/C. Connects Lincoln-Ruiz Cortines north-south of the city.
💡 Uses the same 'Feria' card as Metro. Doesn't reach the stadium directly but connects useful areas.
Sitio taxi (yellow)
In Monterrey, sitio taxis (not street-hail) are relatively safe, but negotiate the fare before getting in.
💡 Ask at your hotel or restaurant. Street taxis in non-tourist zones are risky — use Uber if in doubt.
Urban buses (camiones)
Extensive but chaotic network. Many have NO A/C — tough in 40°C. Cash only.
💡 Only for short trips if you have time. Uber is better for comfort.
Walking
Barrio Antiguo, Centro and Macroplaza are walkable and safe by day. BUT June heat (40°C) makes walking very tough.
💡 Walk very early (before 10am) or at sunset (after 7pm). Always carry water.
🗺️Zones: where to walk, what to avoid
Neighborhood-by-neighborhood advice. Green = safe, yellow = caution, red = avoid
San Pedro Garza García
The safest municipality in Mexico per official data. Upscale area with premium hotels, gourmet restaurants and Fashion Drive mall. Safe day and night.
💡 The best base to stay as a foreigner. 20-25 min to the stadium.
Valle Oriente
Business district with modern hotels (Fiesta Americana, Camino Real), malls and restaurants. Very safe, with good stadium access (15 min).
💡 Hotels here usually offer stadium shuttles on match days.
Barrio Antiguo (by day)
Historic quarter with cobblestone streets, galleries, restaurants and themed bars. Safe by day and weekend nights (patrolled). Late night, take Uber.
💡 The unofficial World Cup fan zone will be here — expect parties until 3am on weekends.
Downtown Monterrey
Macroplaza, Cathedral, MARCO museum and Parque Fundidora. Safe by day with visible tourist police. At night, downtown streets empty fast outside Barrio Antiguo.
💡 Visit Macroplaza and MARCO by day. Dinner in Barrio Antiguo. Take Uber to move around.
Around Estadio BBVA
Guadalupe (municipality where the stadium is) is mixed. The stadium itself will have high security during matches, but surroundings are residential/industrial — not for walking.
💡 Arrive directly by Uber/shuttle. Don't 'explore' the stadium neighborhood — nothing touristy there.
Independencia and Topo Chico
Hillside working-class neighborhoods on Cerro de la Silla and Independencia slopes. Guided tours possible by day, avoid at night.
Peripheral neighborhoods at night
Industrial areas in Apodaca, Escobedo, García — residential and factories. Risky at night with nothing touristy. No reason to visit.
💱Currency exchange (USD, EUR and more)
Where to exchange your foreign money with good rates and safety
Banorte is headquartered in Monterrey — its ATMs are everywhere and usually offer good rates. BBVA also has branches on every corner. Avoid exchanging at the airport or hotel. Exchange houses in San Pedro (Fashion Drive, Calzada del Valle) have competitive rates.
Banorte / BBVA (ATMs)
Branches throughout the metro area
🕒 24/7
Banorte is the northern bank with strong local presence. Use ATMs inside branches. $30-50 MXN fee per international withdrawal.

Largest branch at Fashion Drive (San Pedro). Accepts USD, EUR, CAD, GBP. Better rates than airports.
CIBanco / Monex
Downtown Monterrey, Valle Oriente
🕒 Lun-Vie 9-17
Established exchange houses. Good rates especially for USD — lots of volume due to US proximity.
Citibanamex / HSBC (ATMs)
Throughout the city
🕒 24/7
Banks with international presence. Ideal if your bank has a Citi Global or HSBC agreement (no international fee).
Casas de cambio del aeropuerto MTY

💡Match day tips
1Extreme heat
June in Monterrey reaches temperatures of 35-40°C (95-104°F) with high humidity. It is ESSENTIAL to bring high-SPF sunscreen, a cap or hat, and a reusable water bottle. Constant hydration is vital. Consider buying a portable fan or wet towels to cool down.
2No shade in many sections
Many sections of Estadio BBVA have no roof or shade. If you have the option, choose seats in covered areas or on the shaded west side of the stadium for afternoon matches. Bring sunglasses and neck protection.
3Transportation and surge pricing
On match days, Uber and DiDi will have very high surge pricing. Book your ride in advance or use the Metro to Exposición station and the official FIFA shuttles. If driving, arrive very early to secure parking at nearby shopping malls.
4Spectacular views
Estadio BBVA offers stunning views of Cerro de la Silla and the Sierra Madre mountains. Bring your camera or charged phone to capture amazing photos, especially at sunset when the light is perfect on the mountains.
5Local cuisine
Don't miss Monterrey's cuisine before or after the match: cabrito al pastor (signature dish), machaca con huevo, northern-style carne asada, and the famous flour tortillas. The Barrio Antiguo and San Pedro areas have the best restaurants.
