Baja California road trip: Tijuana → Los Cabos in 10 days (2026)

The Baja California peninsula is one of North America's most underrated road trips: 1,700 km of Transpeninsular highway, Pacific Ocean on one side, Sea of Cortez on the other, gray whales, Valle de Guadalupe wines, desert, fishing villages and Los Cabos resorts. This guide covers the full route in 10 days with rental car or ABC bus, fuel, tolls and lodging data verified May 2026.

Leg 1 — Tijuana + Valle de Guadalupe (days 1-2)

How to arrive

Flight to Tijuana (TIJ): Volaris/VivaAerobus from CDMX, $1,349-2,465 MXN, 3h 30min. Crossing from San Diego (USA): pedestrian via El Chaparral or vehicular via Otay; expect 1-2h return wait to USA.

Car rental

Tijuana is the best rental point (competitive prices, 100+ km less to Los Cabos vs starting from San Diego). Mexico Car Rental, Hertz, Avis, Budget. Book 2+ weeks ahead: $400-700 MXN/day with basic insurance. Ask for Sentra/Versa or similar.

What to do in Tijuana

  • Avenida Revolución, Mercado Hidalgo, Plaza Río.
  • Baja cuisine at Misión 19 or Verde y Crema (chef Javier Plascencia, $400-800/person).
  • Cervecería Cucapá or Mamut: craft beer route.

Valle de Guadalupe (day 2)

40 min from Tijuana to the Valle. 150+ wineries. Three musts: Monte Xanic ($400 tasting), L.A. Cetto (free tour), Casa de Doña Lupe (rustic, food $200). Book 2-3 days ahead.

Eat at Deckman's en El Mogor (chef Drew Deckman, Michelin), Finca Altozano (Javier Plascencia) or Corazón de Tierra. $400-1,200/person.

Where to stay

Tijuana: K Tower ($1,500), Hotel Real del Río ($1,800). Valle de Guadalupe: Encuentro Guadalupe ($6,000-12,000 eco cabins), Cuatro Cuatros ($4,000), Bruma ($8,000+).

Mistake specific to this leg

Driving Valle de Guadalupe + tasting without designated driver. Tastings are generous and there are checkpoints. Hire driver ($800-1,500 full day) or Tijuana-Valle tour ($1,200-2,500 with tasting included).

Leg 2 — Ensenada + La Bufadora (day 3)

How to arrive

Tijuana → Ensenada: 100 km, 1h 30min via scenic coastal toll road (total $130 MXN). Spectacular Pacific views the entire way.

What to do
  • La Bufadora (sea geyser): $30 parking, market, natural phenomenon every 5-10 min by tide.
  • Mercado Negro: fish and seafood tacos at El Tigre or Tacos Fenix ($25-50/taco).
  • Hussong's Cantina (1892, claimed inventor of the margarita).
  • Bodegas de Santo Tomás: historic tasting ($300-400).
  • Where to stay

Ensenada: Las Rosas ($2,500), Hotel Coral ($1,800), Posada El Rey Sol ($1,200).

    Mistake specific to this leg

Eating lunch at La Bufadora — touristy and overpriced. Return to Ensenada center for authentic seafood.

Leg 3 — San Quintín + El Rosario (day 4, transition)

    How to arrive

Ensenada → San Quintín: 200 km, 3h via highway 1 (Transpeninsular). Agricultural plains and Pacific coast.

San Quintín → El Rosario: 60 km more, 1h. Here ends "civilized" north; pure desert begins.

    What to do

    • San Quintín: sport fishing, Pismo clams, Bahía Falsa oysters.
    • El Rosario: famous for Mama Espinoza's (lobster and huge burritos since 1930).

    Where to stay

Hotel Mision Santa Maria San Quintín ($1,500), Bahía Falsa cabins ($800-1,500).

    Mistake specific to this leg

Saving this leg to drive at night. Highway 1 between El Rosario and Guerrero Negro is 2 lanes, no lights, with cattle. Drive only by day.

Leg 4 — Guerrero Negro + gray whales (day 5)

    How to arrive

El Rosario → Guerrero Negro: 350 km, 5h through Cataviña desert (surreal landscape of boojum trees and giant cacti). Gas stations scarce: fill up in El Rosario and Cataviña.

What to do (depends on date)

    • December-March: gray whale watching at Laguna Ojo de Liebre, $750-1,200/person, 3h. The experience is among the world's top.
    • Rest of year: Vizcaíno Reserve (UNESCO), world's largest salt flats (guided $300).

    Where to stay

Hotel Malarrimo ($1,500, also restaurant + whale tours).

    Mistake specific to this leg

Visiting Guerrero Negro April-November expecting whales. Only mid-December to late March. Off-season, skip and sleep in San Ignacio.

    Leg 5 — Loreto + Mission Towns (days 6-7)

    How to arrive

Guerrero Negro → Loreto: 460 km, 6h. Required stops: San Ignacio (palm-tree oasis, 1728 mission, lagoons) and Mulegé (tropical oasis in pure desert, Santa Rosalía river).

    What to do in Loreto

    • Historic center: Misión Nuestra Señora de Loreto (first of the Californias, 1697).
    • Loreto islands tour (Coronado, Carmen, Danzante): $1,500-2,500/person, full day. Snorkel, sea lions, whales (in season).
    • Bahía Concepción + Playa Santispac: 150 km north, one of the best Sea of Cortez beaches.

    Where to stay

Loreto: Posada de las Flores ($3,500), Hotel Junípero ($1,800), Iguana Inn hostel ($600/bed).

    Mistake specific to this leg

Skipping San Ignacio. It's the prettiest oasis in Baja California; date palms and the mission deserve 2-3 hours.

Leg 6 — La Paz + Los Cabos (days 8-10)

    How to arrive La Paz

Loreto → La Paz: 360 km, 4h 30min. Highway notably improves. Stops: Bahía Magdalena (gray whales in season, departs from Puerto López Mateos) and El Triunfo (abandoned mining town).

What to do in La Paz (day 8)

    • Malecón at sunset (5 km).
    • Espíritu Santo tour (UNESCO): swim with sea lions, $2,000-3,500/person, full day.
    • Playa Balandra (world top 10): free, no services. Go early (450/day cap).
    • Eat chocolate clams at El Bismark or fish tacos at Tacos Hermanos González.

La Paz → Los Cabos (day 9)

200 km, 2h 30min via Transpeninsular or via Pacific route (longer, better scenery).

Los Cabos = San José del Cabo + Cabo San Lucas, connected by Tourist Corridor (32 km).

    What to do

    • Cabo San Lucas Arch by boat: $400-600/person, 1h.
    • Lover's Beach: only by boat. Other side: Divorce Beach (dangerous, no swim).
    • San José del Cabo old town: galleries, restaurants, calmer vibe.
    • Marlin or dorado fishing: $4,000-8,000/boat (4 people).
    • Eat at Flora Farms (San José, gourmet with garden), Edith's (Cabo, lobster) or Tacos Gardenias (street).

    Where to stay

San José del Cabo: colonial vibe. El Encanto Inn ($1,800), Casa Natalia ($3,500). Cabo San Lucas: party vibe. Todo Santos hotel ($2,500-5,000), Hotel Mar de Cortez ($1,500).

    Return flight (day 10)

Los Cabos Airport (SJD): flight to CDMX from $1,000-2,860 MXN, 2h. Volaris, Aeroméxico, VivaAerobus.

    Mistake specific to this leg

Staying only in Cabo San Lucas spring break zone. The interesting part is San José del Cabo and East Cape coastal towns.

Common mistakes that ruin this road trip

    • Not booking car ahead. Tijuana has 50+ rental agencies but cheap ones sell out. Book 3-4 weeks ahead.
    • Driving highway 1 at night. No lighting, loose cattle, closed gas stations. Day driving only.
    • Filling tank only "when low." Between El Rosario and Guerrero Negro there's ONE pemex (Cataviña). If closed, problem. Top off whenever you see a pemex.
    • Assuming Cabo San Lucas IS Baja California. It's the last part. Stay only in Cabo and you miss the rest.
    • Planning whales out of season. Ojo de Liebre/Magdalena only Dec-Mar.
    • Not bringing USD cash. Small mid-peninsula gas stations only accept cash (pesos or dollars). $200-300 USD aside for emergencies.
    • Skipping full car insurance. Baja roads are dangerous (cattle, potholes, no lights). Pay for full coverage.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is driving Baja California safe?

Yes, traditional tourist routes (Tijuana-Valle, Ensenada, La Paz, Los Cabos) are safe. The Transpeninsular requires caution due to road conditions (not crime). Bring spare tire and extra water.

Do I need a special car permit?

Not for Mexicans. Foreigners with US car: YES, you need TIP and FMM. Rental in Baja: no TIP needed but yes FMM (included on crossing).

    When's the best time?

October-May: temperate, no hurricanes. December-March: whales. June-September: very hot (40°C+) and hurricane season. Avoid August.

Can I do the route without a car?

Yes, ABC has Tijuana-La Paz-Los Cabos service but you miss Valle de Guadalupe (no service), Bahía de los Ángeles, San Ignacio. Total ABC ~$3,000-4,000 MXN. Not worth vs $4,500 car rental.

How much to cross the border?

Pedestrian (Tijuana - San Ysidro): free crossing, 1-2h wait back to USA. Vehicular: $30 USD one-time FMM if staying 7+ days. SENTRI lane (express): $100/person/5 years for frequent travelers.

Worth renting in USA and crossing?

NO. Most US rental companies prohibit taking the car to Mexico. And if they allow ($30-50/day extra insurance), a fine or accident is a nightmare. Rent in Tijuana directly.
