Mexico with kids: 3 itineraries (7, 10 and 15 days) — 2026

Mexico with kids is one of Latin America's most family-friendly destinations: short flights, food kids love (taquitos, quesadillas, popsicles), theme parks and safe beaches, and locals who adore little ones. This guide proposes 3 scalable itineraries — 7, 10 and 15 days — focused on simple transport, family lodging, parks and beaches. Verified May 2026 data.

Version A — 7 days: CDMX + Riviera Maya light

Days 1-3: Mexico City

What to do with kids
  • Chapultepec Park: mini-train $25/person, paddle boats $80, Chapultepec Zoo free, Papalote Children's Museum $295/person (interactive, perfect 4-12 years).
  • Xochimilco: private trajinera $600-800/hour (4-6 people), food on board, mariachis. Without canal bike rides.
  • Teotihuacán (45 min): climb only Sun or Moon pyramid (NOT allowed climb the big Sun pyramid since 2020). Hot air balloon ride $3,500/person if you want extra (5-12 years).
Where to stay with kids

Roma Norte or Polanco. Hotel Stara or Habita ($2,500-4,500), Casa Pepe Romay ($3,800), Airbnb apartment ($1,500-3,500/night).

Day 4: flight to Cancún

Flight CDMX → Cancún: $1,500-2,500/adult, kids 30% less. Volaris/VivaAerobus.

Days 4-7: Riviera Maya light (Playa del Carmen)

Why Playa del Carmen and not Cancún

Playa del Carmen is more walkable and family-friendly. Cancún Hotel Zone is good for all-inclusive but less authentic.

What to do
  • Xcaret ($2,500/adult, $1,250 kids 5-11): best family theme park. Underground river, night show, beach, snorkel. Full day.
  • Xel-Há ($2,200/adult, $1,100 kids): natural water park with slide, snorkel, all-inclusive (food + drinks + activities).
  • Akumal Beach (free or $300 with tour): swim with sea turtles, ideal kids 6+.
  • Cenote Nicte-Há ($150 entry): small calm cenote, perfect first cenote for kids.
  • Quinta Avenida evening: pedestrian, gelaterias, toys, marquesitas.
Where to stay

Family hotels with kids club: Iberostar Selection Paraiso, Grand Velas Riviera Maya, Hotel Riu Palace ($4,500-12,000/night all-inclusive).

Version B — 10 days: Version A + Bacalar and cenotes

Days 7-9: Bacalar (7-color lagoon)

ADO Playa del Carmen → Bacalar: $400, 4h 30min. Tren Maya: $400-500, 3h.

What to do with kids
  • Lagoon boat tour: $400/person shared (3 hours). Kids fascinated.
  • Cenote Cocalitos with stromatolites: $50.
  • Sunrise paddleboard (ideal kids 8+).
Where to stay

Casa Hormiga (family-friendly, lagoon-front, $3,500-5,500). Aldea Bacalar ($2,500-4,000). Magic Bacalar hostel with privates ($1,200-2,000).

Days 9-10: return to Cancún + flight

ADO Bacalar → Cancún: $400, 5h. Flight CUN → CDMX (with home connection).

Version C — 15 days: Version B + colonial Yucatán

Days 11-13: Mérida + Chichén Itzá

ADO Bacalar → Mérida: $410, 6h. Or Tren Maya: $500, 5h.

What to do with kids
  • Mérida center: Plaza Grande, Cathedral, tourist horse-carriages for kids $300/30min.
  • Hacienda Sotuta de Peón (1h drive, $700/person): henequén tour, private cenote, swimming and traditional food, full day.
  • Chichén Itzá (2h by bus or day tour): first Mayan ruin, scarce shade so arrive 8 AM. Kids tire fast in sun — max 2 hours.
  • Cenote Ik Kil (after Chichén): $250, refreshing, with ropes to climb.
Where to stay

Casa Lecanda ($3,500), Diez Diez ($1,800-2,500), Hyatt Regency Mérida ($4,000+). Boutique with pool ideal for kids.

Days 13-15: Tulum + cenotes

ADO/Tren Maya Mérida → Tulum: $250-400, 2-3h.

What to do with kids
  • Tulum archaeological zone (morning, scarce shade).
  • Cenote Gran Cenote or Dos Ojos: ideal kids 6+.
  • Tulum beach (Akumal zone specifically, no sargassum): turtles.
Return flight (day 15)

Tulum (TQO) → CDMX: $1,500-2,500/adult. Or Cancún (CUN) if better fares.

Common mistakes traveling with kids

  • Not respecting youngest's pace. Adult plan + 30% more time. A pyramid at 14:00 in full sun = guaranteed tantrums.
  • Ignoring nap time. Kids 4-7 need quiet afternoon. Program intense activities morning, pool/beach afternoon.
  • Overestimating theme parks. Xcaret is FULL DAY + exhausting. After, you need a quiet day. Not 2 parks back to back.
  • Underestimating the heat. May-October Yucatán + Caribbean are 32-38°C. Carry constant hydration, high SPF, hat.
  • Not booking restaurants with kids' menu. Not all have one. Book ahead; ask for kids' menu.
  • Forgetting passport copy / travel permit. If minors travel with one parent or no parents, Mexico requires notarized authorization from absent parent.
  • Paying for full-day Chichén Itzá tour. 13h with a kid is a marathon. Better 2 days: Mérida base + half-day Chichén.

Frequently asked questions

Ideal age for this route?

Kids 4-12 years. Under 3: possible but more demanding (strollers on SMA cobblestones impossible, Yucatán heat). Teenagers: itinerary may bore them, consider more active activities (snorkel, surf, zipline).

Safe to travel with kids?

Yes. Tourist routes are safe. Private hospitals (ABC, Galenia in Cancún) are top. Bring international travel insurance ($30-100 USD/person).

Is the water drinkable?

NOT from the tap. Only bottled or jug water. Hotels provide water. Brush teeth with bottled water first days if sensitive.

Kids without Mexican passport?

Need a passport (national or foreign). No child can enter/exit without one.

Recommended vaccines?

Standard schedule. Mexico does NOT require yellow fever for entry (though some countries ask if you're coming with layover in risk zones).

What to bring?

Biodegradable SPF 50+, repellent, hats, water sandals, children's paracetamol/ibuprofen, electrolytes, snacks (for cravings), book/tablet for flights.
