Yucatán + Quintana Roo route in 12 days: the no-Cancún itinerary
Cancún is what most visitors do; those who want to know the real Yucatán skip it. This 12-day itinerary covers Mérida, Izamal, Valladolid, Chichén Itzá, Tulum (pueblo, not hotel zone), Bacalar and Holbox — bypassing the resort sprawl of Cancún's hotel zone. Transport data and prices verified May 2026.
Leg 1 — Mérida (days 1-3)
How to arrive
Direct flight to Mérida Airport (MID): Volaris/Aeroméxico from CDMX, $1,200-2,500 MXN. From MID to center: taxi $250 MXN or Uber $180. If arriving Cancún (CUN), ADO Cancún→Mérida is $300 MXN, 4 hours — but kills half a day.
What to do
- Plaza Grande, Catedral San Ildefonso, Casa de Montejo (free).
- Paseo de Montejo + Quinta Montes Molina ($150).
- Sunday "Mérida en domingo": closed streets, market, free concerts.
- Cuzamá excursion (3 cenotes by henequen-rail truck): $300-500 MXN/person, full day.
- Uxmal (underrated archaeological zone): $90 INAH, 1h drive. Better than Chichén Itzá per many archaeologists.
Where to stay
Centro or Santiago/Santa Ana. Hostels $250-450; boutique hotels $1,500-3,500 MXN (Casa San Ángel, Diez Diez, Casa Lecanda). Avoid Norte (far from tourist center).
Mistake specific to this leg
Not booking Cuzamá tour ahead in high season — trucks fill up by 10 AM. Call the night before or arrive before 8 AM.
Leg 2 — Izamal and Valladolid (days 4-5)
How to arrive
Mérida → Izamal: ADO Conecta or colectivo $80 MXN, 1h 15min. Izamal → Valladolid: ADO $120, 2h. Or combinable on Tren Maya Mérida → Valladolid (Izamal stop via Chichén): $400-500 by class.
What to do (Izamal)
- Convento de San Antonio de Padua: the entire "yellow town" painted one shade. 30-45 min.
- Pirámide Kinich Kakmó (free, in town center). 20 min.
- Eat cochinita pibil at Kinich (best in region per Anthony Bourdain).
What to do (Valladolid)
- Colonial center, Iglesia San Servacio, Calzada de los Frailes (most photogenic street in Yucatán).
- Cenote Zací (in town center), $30 MXN.
- Cenotes Suytun, Xkekén, Samula at 7-15 km, $80-150 each.
Where to stay
Valladolid center: Casa Hipil ($1,200), El Mesón del Marqués ($2,000), Hostal Candelaria ($300/bed).
Mistake specific to this leg
Eating at restaurants around Valladolid's main plaza. Walk 2 blocks to El Mexicano or La Selva for half the price.
Leg 3 — Chichén Itzá (day trip from Valladolid)
How to arrive
ADO Valladolid → Chichén: $80 MXN, 45 min. Tren Maya Express: $250 MXN, 35 min. Rental car in Valladolid: $400-600 MXN/day.
What to do
Leave Valladolid 7 AM, arrive Chichén 7:55. Opening 8 AM. Until 10:30 you have it almost alone (buses arrive after 11). Foreign entry $697 MXN ($575 INAH + $122 Cultur), national/resident $105.
Combine with Cenote Ik Kil (2 km away, $250 MXN) and lunch in Pisté before returning to Valladolid.
Mistake specific to this leg
Accepting guides who approach you at the entrance: $400-800 MXN, uncertified. Book official guides via SECTUR Yucatán or GetYourGuide ($600-1,200, certified).
Leg 4 — Tulum pueblo (days 6-8)
How to arrive
ADO Valladolid → Tulum: $250 MXN, 2h 30min. Tren Maya Valladolid → Tulum (via Cobá): $350-500, 2h.
What to do
- Tulum archaeological zone: $150 INAH, arrive before 9 AM. Only Mayan ruins facing the sea.
- Cobá (45 min from Tulum): $100. You can still climb Nohoch Mul pyramid (135 steps).
- Cenotes: Gran Cenote ($500), Dos Ojos ($350), Calavera ($250). Combinable full day.
- Sian Ka'an (UNESCO): day tour $1,500-2,500 MXN.
Where to stay (key decision)
Tulum pueblo (not hotel zone). Hostels $400-700; 3* hotels $1,200-2,500. The hotel zone costs $4,000-15,000/night and is a tourist trap. For dinner/photos, taxi to the zone and return to pueblo.
Mistake specific to this leg
Paying $400-700 MXN for breakfast in hotel zone. In the pueblo same breakfast is $80-150 at Burrito Amor or Babel Café.
Leg 5 — Bacalar (days 9-10)
How to arrive
ADO Tulum → Bacalar: $295 MXN, 3h 30min. Tren Maya: $250-400, 2h 15min, more comfortable.
What to do
- Lagoon boat tour through 7-color lagoon: $400-700 MXN shared, 3-4h. Ask for electric boat.
- Cenote Azul ($25), Cenote Cocalitos with stromatolites ($50), Cenote Negro ($50).
- Sunrise paddleboard (the postcard): $200-400/hour, free if your hotel is lagoon-front.
- San Felipe Fort (free, history museum).
Where to stay
Town (cheaper, $400-1,500) or lagoon-front ($2,500-6,000: Casa Hormiga, Aldea Bacalar, Mía).
Mistake specific to this leg
Bringing non-biodegradable sunscreen. Hotels won't let you in the lagoon with regular chemicals — stromatolites are sensitive living organisms.
Leg 6 — Holbox (days 11-12)
How to arrive
ADO Bacalar → Chiquilá: $400 MXN, 5h. Ferry Chiquilá ↔ Holbox: $250 one-way, 25 min, every 30 min. If going during whale shark season (Jul 15 - Sept 15), plan to arrive 2-3 days early to secure a tour spot.
What to do
- Punta Mosquito at sunset (walkable from center).
- 3-island tour (Pájaros, Pasión, Yalahau): $1,000-1,500 MXN/person.
- Bioluminescence (Jul-Jan): night tour $800-1,200 MXN.
- Whale shark (Jul 15 - Sept 15): tour $2,500-3,500/person, worth every peso.
Where to stay
Holbox center, no cars. Hostels $400-700; boutique hotels $2,000-5,000 MXN. Book 2+ weeks ahead in high season.
Mistake specific to this leg
Assuming Holbox is like Tulum. It's an unpaved island, sand streets, no ATMs (except 1 that runs out of cash). Bring pesos cash from Bacalar.

Common mistakes that ruin this itinerary
- Flying to Cancún instead of Mérida. CUN→Mérida is 4-5h bus + traffic. If your MID flight costs less than $1,000 more, it's worth it.
- Staying in Tulum hotel zone. 3-5x more expensive and removed from town. Stay in pueblo, taxi out for photos.
- Not booking Tren Maya ahead in high season. Sells out weekends/holidays. Book at turitren.mx 2+ weeks ahead.
- Underestimating heat in Chichén. By 11 AM it's 38°C. Arrive 8 AM, leave before noon.
- Going to Holbox without cash. ATMs fail, card payments rare. Bring $3,000-5,000 MXN cash.
- Skipping Uxmal. Better preserved than Chichén Itzá, no crowds, jungle setting. If only one ruin, consider Uxmal.
Frequently asked questions
Should I rent a car for this route?
Only if you want to explore Yucatán cenotes on your own (Cuzamá, ruta Yucatán) or visit Uxmal. ADO + Tren Maya cover the entire base itinerary. Rental: $600-900 MXN/day plus fuel + tolls.
Is this itinerary safe?
Yucatán is one of Mexico's safest states. Quintana Roo (Tulum, Bacalar, Holbox) also. Standard precautions: no night driving, Uber over taxi, separate passport copy.
When is the best time?
November-March: dry weather, 25-30°C, clear water for snorkel. Avoid September-October (Caribbean hurricanes). July-August is hot but coincides with whale shark in Holbox (Jul 15 - Sept 15).
Can I do the route in fewer days?
10 days is realistic minimum. Cut 1 day from Mérida and skip Holbox (adds 1 day pure transport). 8 days: skip Bacalar and Holbox, focus on Yucatán + Tulum.
Recommended internet/SIM?
eSIM Airalo or Holafly: $25-40 USD for 12 GB / 12 days. Telcel physical SIM at airport: $200-400 MXN. Holbox has WiFi but limited; download Maps offline.
What about sargassum?
April to August sargassum can hit Tulum and Caribbean coast. Bacalar (lagoon) unaffected. Holbox also. If traveling those months, prioritize interior + lagoon over open beaches.
