Leg 1 — Mexico City (day 1)
How to start
If arriving internationally, land at CDMX (MEX or NLU) and start the route the next day. If already in Mexico, head straight to the first destination. The base itinerary assumes 1 day in CDMX before leaving.
What to do in 1 day
- Centro Histórico: Zócalo, Templo Mayor ($100), Palacio Nacional with Rivera murals (free).
- Lunch: tacos al pastor at El Huequito or Los Cocuyos ($20-30/taco).
- Afternoon: Frida's Casa Azul ($350, book 2-3 weeks ahead).
How to continue to Querétaro
ETN or Primera Plus from Terminal Norte: $427-550 MXN, 2h 30min, departures every 30 min. CDMX→Querétaro tolls $226 if driving.
Mistake specific to this leg
Booking 1 night in CDMX in tourist zones like Polanco. Roma Norte/Condesa are cheaper and walkable.
Leg 2 — Querétaro (day 2)
What to do
- Centro Histórico (UNESCO): Plaza de Armas, Aqueduct, Cerro de las Campanas (where Maximilian was executed).
- Templo de Santa Rosa de Viterbo (lesser-known baroque gem).
- Callejoneada walking tour at night (Thu-Sat, $200-300, leaves from center).
- Mercado de la Cruz: gorditas and Querétaro mole for $80-150.
Where to stay
Centro Histórico. Hostal Casa Andrea ($350/bed), Hotel Casa de la Marquesa ($3,500), Hotel Mesón de Santa Rosa ($2,200).
How to continue to San Miguel
ETN/Primera Plus Querétaro → San Miguel: $250 MXN, 1h 15min, 4 daily departures. The route crosses wine villages (nice scenery).
Mistake specific to this leg
Skipping Querétaro assuming "it's just a stopover." It has the best wine region in central Mexico and the best-preserved UNESCO center in the region.
Leg 3 — San Miguel de Allende (days 3-4)
What to do
- La Parroquia (iconic neo-Gothic church) at sunset (free).
- Fábrica La Aurora: 30+ galleries, free (Mon-Sun 10-18h).
- La Gruta hot springs: $250-350 MXN. Arrive 9 AM before heat.
- Guanajuato wine route (Cuna de Tierra, Dos Búhos): tour with tasting from $300.
- Day of the Dead in SMA (Nov 1-2): the best Bajío celebration. Book 6 months ahead.
Where to stay
Centro or Guadiana. Casa de la Noche ($3,500-6,000), Casa Schuck ($4,500-8,000), Hostal Inn ($300-500/bed).
Eat one specific thing
Mole at Atrio Restaurant or birria tacos at Fat Boy Tacos (market, $25-35/taco).
Optional Day 4 excursion: Dolores Hidalgo
Birthplace of Independence, mole/pulque/beer ice creams. ETN San Miguel → Dolores: $80, 45 min. Round trip in a day.
Mistake specific to this leg
Booking top SMA restaurants less than 1 week ahead on weekends. Áperi, Moxi, Atrio sell out 1-2 weeks ahead.
Leg 4 — Guanajuato capital (days 5-6)
How to arrive
ETN/Primera Plus San Miguel → Guanajuato: $200 MXN, 1h 30min, 5 daily departures. The route passes Dolores Hidalgo if you want to stop.
What to do
- Centro Histórico (UNESCO): Jardín de la Unión, Teatro Juárez, University of Guanajuato.
- Callejón del Beso (touristy but iconic) + Calle Sopeña.
- Funicular to Pípila (viewpoint, $80 round trip) — best Guanajuato view at sunset.
- Mummies Museum ($90, controversial but visited).
- Mina La Valenciana or Mina del Edén ($80-150) for mining history.

Where to stay
Centro or Pastita. Hotel Casa Estrella ($1,800), Hotel Casa del Rector ($2,800), Hostal de la Condesa ($300/bed).
Mistake specific to this leg
Underestimating Guanajuato's slopes. The city is mountainous, almost everything is stairs or hill. Bring comfy shoes. Not wheelchair-friendly or for knee problems.
Leg 5 — Return to CDMX (day 7)
How to return
ETN Guanajuato → CDMX direct: $880 MXN, 4h 30min. Or fly from León (BJX) to save time: Volaris from $1,200, 1h 15min.

Common mistakes that ruin this itinerary
- Renting a car thinking "I'll be flexible." You can't drive into SMA or Guanajuato centers. Parking $200-400/day. Bus is cheaper and faster on this corridor.
- Visiting San Miguel during Holy Week. Spectacular processions but prices x2-3 and crowds. Better: Day of the Dead or November.
- Going to Guanajuato in August during Cervantino without reservation. Impossible to find hotel. That month prioritize Querétaro or Pátzcuaro.
- Eating at Guanajuato's main plaza restaurants. Overpriced and average. Walk 3 blocks to Truco 7 or La Casa del Quijote.
- Underestimating cold nights in SMA and Guanajuato. December-February drops to 5-10°C. Bring a jacket.
- Assuming hot springs are spa-style. La Gruta is a cave, rustic vibe. It's the experience, not luxury. For spa, Escondido Place ($600+).
Frequently asked questions
Is renting a car worth it?
Not for this route. Bajío cities are walkable and luxury ETN/Primera Plus buses are more comfortable. Only consider a car for distant vineyards or flexibility to towns without direct bus.
Is it safe?
Yes, the Querétaro-Guanajuato corridor is among Mexico's safest. Standard precautions especially in CDMX (no street taxis, Uber yes).
When's the best time?
October-November: Cervantino + Day of the Dead. March-May: ideal shoulder season, perfect weather. Avoid January-February (cold nights) and August (rains and Cervantino crowded).
Can I do the route in fewer days?
5 days is feasible: 1 day Querétaro, 2 SMA, 2 Guanajuato. Shorter loses the slow pace that's the Bajío's charm.
How walkable are the cities?
Querétaro: 90% walkable. SMA: 100% walkable, cobblestones (comfy shoes). Guanajuato: 80% walkable but VERY hilly. Knee issues? Local taxis between points.
Is the Cervantino Festival worth it?
Yes if you like performing arts (theater, dance, classical/contemporary music). Book hotel 6+ months ahead. Otherwise, avoid Guanajuato in October (prices x3).
