Legal status
Mexico recognizes same-sex marriage federally since 2022. In Quintana Roo (Cancún's state), same-sex marriage has been legal since 2012, making it one of the first states to approve it. Foreign couples can also legally marry in Cancún, and the marriage is internationally recognized.

Legal requirements 📋
The civil wedding process in Cancún takes approximately 3-5 business days from application. First, documents are submitted to the Civil Registry, then blood tests are done at an authorized lab, and finally the ceremony is scheduled. A Civil Registry judge can officiate the ceremony at your chosen hotel or venue for an additional fee. It's recommended to hire a local wedding planner to handle all the paperwork.
Required documents:
- •Birth certificates of both parties (apostilled if foreign)
- •Valid official ID (passport for foreigners)
- •Blood tests from an authorized lab in Quintana Roo (within 15 days prior)
- •Four witnesses with official ID (the judge can provide witnesses if needed)
- •Marriage application at the Civil Registry of Benito Juárez
- •If divorced: divorce certificate. If widowed: death certificate of previous spouse
Foreign couples
Foreign couples can legally marry in Cancún. Documents issued outside Mexico must be apostilled and translated to Spanish by a certified translator. Marriage celebrated in Mexico is internationally recognized. Many couples opt for a symbolic wedding (without legal validity) which is simpler, and complement it with a civil wedding in their home country.

Best season 🌤️
The best time for weddings in Cancún is November to April (dry season). December-March has perfect weather (25-30°C/77-86°F) but is high season with higher prices. May-June and September-November are excellent options with lower prices and good weather. Avoid August-October due to hurricane season.
