LGBTIQ+ weddings & celebrations 🏳️‍🌈

Legal status

Mexico recognizes same-sex marriage federally since 2022. In Quintana Roo (Cancún's state), same-sex marriage has been legal since 2012, making it one of the first states to approve it. Foreign couples can also legally marry in Cancún, and the marriage is internationally recognized.

Cancún Pride

Cancún Pride takes place annually in June, with activities in the Hotel Zone and downtown Cancún. It includes a parade along Boulevard Kukulcán, beach club parties, and cultural events. Cancún is recognized as one of Mexico's and Latin America's most LGBTIQ+-friendly destinations.

Tips for LGBTIQ+ couples

  • Most international chain hotels in Cancún have explicit inclusion policies and trained staff. Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton, and AMResorts are especially recognized for their inclusive wedding programs.
  • Cancún Pride is celebrated every June in the Hotel Zone with a parade, parties, and cultural events. If you plan your wedding around these dates, the city has an especially festive and welcoming atmosphere.
  • Wedding planning companies like 'Cancún LGBTQ Weddings' and 'Love Cancún Weddings' specialize in same-sex weddings with expertise in the local legal process.

All listed venues (6 of 6) are LGBTIQ+ friendly.

Accessible & inclusive celebrations

Cancún has made significant progress in tourism accessibility. The Hotel Zone features modern infrastructure that facilitates mobility, and many resorts have invested in adaptations for guests with motor, visual, and hearing disabilities. Mexico has the General Law for the Inclusion of People with Disabilities, and Cancún as a major tourist destination meets accessibility standards in its main establishments.

Accessibility tips

  • Request a beach wheelchair (amphibious chair) at your hotel. Several resorts provide them at no cost so everyone can enjoy the Caribbean sea. Dreams Riviera Cancún and Moon Palace offer this service.
  • Cancún airport (CUN) offers assistance service for passengers with reduced mobility. Request it when booking your flight. Adapted transport from the airport should be booked in advance through services like 'Cancún Accessible' or 'Wheelchair Cancún'.
  • For guests with hearing disabilities, ask the hotel about availability of Mexican Sign Language (LSM) interpreters or hearing loop systems for the ceremony.
  • Many tours and activities in Cancún offer adapted versions. Snorkeling tours have options with special flotation vests, and some cenotes like Cenote Azul have adapted access.

Accessible transport

Cancún Airport has ramps, elevators, and wheelchair service. For ground transport, 'Cancún Accessible' and 'Wheelchair Cancún' offer vans with ramps and wheelchair space. ADO buses from the terminal also have basic accessibility. Within the Hotel Zone, most hotels can coordinate adapted transport for their guests.

Accessible beaches

Playa Delfines

Public beach with access ramps, accessible parking, adapted restrooms, and amphibious wheelchair service provided by the municipal government. It's Cancún's most accessible beach with the iconic 'CANCÚN' sign in the background.

Practical information

Legal requirements 📋

The civil wedding process in Cancún takes approximately 3-5 business days from application. First, documents are submitted to the Civil Registry, then blood tests are done at an authorized lab, and finally the ceremony is scheduled. A Civil Registry judge can officiate the ceremony at your chosen hotel or venue for an additional fee. It's recommended to hire a local wedding planner to handle all the paperwork.

Required documents:

  • Birth certificates of both parties (apostilled if foreign)
  • Valid official ID (passport for foreigners)
  • Blood tests from an authorized lab in Quintana Roo (within 15 days prior)
  • Four witnesses with official ID (the judge can provide witnesses if needed)
  • Marriage application at the Civil Registry of Benito Juárez
  • If divorced: divorce certificate. If widowed: death certificate of previous spouse

Foreign couples

Foreign couples can legally marry in Cancún. Documents issued outside Mexico must be apostilled and translated to Spanish by a certified translator. Marriage celebrated in Mexico is internationally recognized. Many couples opt for a symbolic wedding (without legal validity) which is simpler, and complement it with a civil wedding in their home country.
