Chiapas route in 8 days: San Cristóbal, Sumidero Canyon and Palenque

Chiapas is Mexico's untamed south: indigenous Tzotzil and Tzeltal villages, Lacandon jungle, emerald-green rivers and jungle Mayan ruins. This 8-day route starts in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, passes through the Sumidero Canyon, settles in San Cristóbal de las Casas (3 nights base), explores indigenous villages and ends in Palenque + Misol-Há and Agua Azul waterfalls. Data and prices verified May 2026.

Leg 1 — Tuxtla Gutiérrez + Sumidero Canyon (day 1)

How to arrive

Flight to Tuxtla Airport (TGZ): Volaris/Aeroméxico from CDMX, $1,500-2,800 MXN, 1h 30min. From TGZ to Chiapa de Corzo (canyon port): taxi/Uber $250-300 MXN.

What to do

  • Sumidero Canyon boat tour: $400-500 MXN/person, 2h. Departures from Chiapa de Corzo every 30-60 min until 16:00. You'll see spider monkeys, crocodiles, waterfalls.
  • Chiapa de Corzo: colonial town with La Pila (fountain), Santo Domingo church. 1-2 hours.
  • Eat Chiapas cuisine: sour pozol or oven-baked cochito at El Campanario.

How to continue to San Cristóbal

Colectivos Chiapa de Corzo → San Cristóbal: $80 MXN, 1h 15min. Or direct taxi TGZ → San Cristóbal: $700-900 MXN.

Mistake specific to this leg

Taking the Sumidero boat in late hours (after 14:00) — bad light for photos and animals hide. Ideally 9-11 AM.

Leg 2 — San Cristóbal de las Casas (days 2-4)

What to do (center)

  • Andador Eclesiástico: pedestrian street, Cathedral, Templo del Carmen. 2-3 hours.
  • Santo Domingo Crafts Market: Tzotzil textiles, amber, coffee. Bargain politely.
  • Guadalupe Church (climb with view) and San Cristóbal Church (another view).
  • Mercado Municipal José Castillo Tielmans: authentic local food, $15 al pastor tacos.
  • Coffee shops: La Selva, Yik' Café, Frontera (best coffee in town, $50-90).

Indigenous village excursions (day 3)

  • San Juan Chamula: church where pre-Hispanic and Catholic rituals merge. Photos forbidden inside. Shared tour $250-400 MXN/person, 4-5 hours, includes Zinacantán.
  • Zinacantán: Tzotzil weavers' village. Family-house visit includes backstrap loom demo and traditional breakfast.
  • Important: go with certified local guide. Do NOT enter Chamula church without one.

Excursion to El Chiflón waterfalls + Montebello Lakes (day 4)

  • Full-day tour from San Cristóbal: $700-900 MXN/person, 12 hours (departs 6 AM).
  • Velo de Novia waterfall (70m, $80 entry) + natural pools.
  • Montebello Lakes: 7 green-blue lakes, $40 park entry.
  • Long day but worth it. Bring swimsuit.

Where to stay

Historic center. Posada del Abuelito ($300/bed hostel), Hotel Casavieja ($1,200), Hotel Bo ($3,500-5,000), Casa Felipe Flores ($2,500).

Eat one specific thing

Oven-baked cochito at La Lupita or bread soup at LUM (chef Marta Zepeda).

Mistake specific to this leg

Visiting Chamula on your own without a guide. The church has strict rules (no photos, no hat, sit on floor) that the guide explains. Can be a profound experience with a guide or very awkward without.

Leg 3 — Palenque (days 5-6)

How to arriveOCC bus San Cristóbal → Palenque: $400-500 MXN, 8 hours (overnight route). Or tourist van (Sian Ka'an Tours, etc.) stopping at Agua Azul + Misol-Há along the way: $700-1,000 MXN, 10-11h with stops.

Tourist van is the smart pick: covers 3 attractions in 1 day. Departs 5-6 AM from San Cristóbal.

What to do en route

  • Misol-Há: 35m waterfall, $30 entry, 30-45 min. Behind the falls is a walkable cave.
  • Agua Azul: series of intense turquoise waterfalls (in dry season, Nov-Apr). $40 entry, 1-2 hours. NOT in rains (brown color).

What to do in Palenque

  • Palenque archaeological zone (UNESCO): $150 INAH + $90 ANP, open 8-17h. Templo de las Inscripciones (Pakal's tomb), Palacio, Templo del Sol. 4-5 hours.
  • Arrive 8 AM. By 11 AM it's 32-35°C with high humidity.
  • Site museum (included): worth it, excellent context.

Where to stay

Palenque town (cheaper) or El Panchán area (near the ruins, jungle vibe, $350-1,200/night). Margarita & Ed's, Boutique Hotel Quinta Chanabnal, Hotel Tulija.

Mistake specific to this leg

Staying in Palenque town and commuting to the ruins. El Panchán is 5 km from the site, much better jungle atmosphere.

Leg 4 — Bonampak + Yaxchilán (day 7, optional)

Why

If you have 1 extra day and love jungle Mayan ruins. Bonampak has the best-preserved Mayan frescoes; Yaxchilán is only reachable by river boat on the Usumacinta.

How to arrive

Full-day tour from Palenque: $1,500-2,500 MXN/person, 12 hours, includes food and transport. Impossible by public transport.

Mistake specific to this leg

Booking the Bonampak tour the day before — good tours sell out. Reserve 2-3 days ahead.

Leg 5 — Return (day 8)

How to return

Flight from Palenque Airport (PQM): Aeromar or Volaris to CDMX/Mérida, $1,800-3,500 MXN, 1h 30min. Few daily flights, reserve early.

Land alternative: ADO Palenque → Mérida $700, 8h. ADO Palenque → CDMX $1,200, 14h (overnight).

Mistake specific to this leg

Assuming there are daily flights from PQM. There are 1-2 a day and they fill up in high season.

Common mistakes that ruin this itinerary

  • Underestimating distances. San Cristóbal to Montebello Lakes is 5h there + 5h back + visits. Most SC tours are 12+ hours full days.
  • Visiting Agua Azul during rains. June-October the water looks brown, not turquoise. If traveling those months, skip that stop and focus on Palenque + Misol-Há.
  • Not respecting Chamula rules. No photos in church (camera will be confiscated), no hat, sit when rituals happen. A guide is essential.
  • Visiting Palenque mid-day. Heat and humidity overwhelming. 8-11 AM is the ideal window.
  • Skipping Bonampak for budget reasons. If you're into Mayan ruins, Bonampak's frescoes don't exist anywhere else. Worth the day and $1,500-2,500.
  • Thinking San Cristóbal is hot. It's 2,200m altitude. Nights of 8-12°C year-round. Always pack a jacket.

Frequently asked questions

Is Chiapas safe?

San Cristóbal and traditional tourist routes are safe. Avoid border zones (deep Lacandon Jungle, Guatemala border) without local guide. In 2024-2025 there were sporadic road blockades on secondary roads due to political issues — check news before traveling.

When's the best time?

November-April (dry). May is ideal shoulder. June-October rains a lot, though jungle looks lusher. December-January is high tourist season (prices +30%).

Are Bonampak/Yaxchilán worth it?

Yes if you're passionate about Mayan ruins and want an authentic jungle experience. Yaxchilán only by river boat on the Usumacinta. If only one Mayan ruin, Palenque is enough.

How important is an indigenous guide?

For Chamula: essential. For Zinacantán: highly recommended. For archaeological zones: optional (audioguide usually enough). Book guides via SECTUR Chiapas or certified agencies in San Cristóbal.

Altitude sickness in San Cristóbal?

Possible. 2,200 meters. If coming from sea level, first days drink water, avoid hard alcohol, sleep 8h. Most acclimatize within 24-48h.

Card or cash?

San Cristóbal: 70% cash. Indigenous villages: 100% cash. Palenque: 50/50. Bring $5,000-8,000 MXN cash from Tuxtla airport.

Next steps

If Chiapas calls you, also read the tourist safety guide for specific precautions. To extend the trip, consider combining with Mexico in 20 days or with Yucatán + Quintana Roo (Palenque connects well to Mérida by bus or plane).
